White paper on the Future of Education in Switzerland
In the future, over two thirds of a class should gain a qualification for tertiary education. At the same time, the development of interpersonal skills need to be supported. Education should not just provide the knowledge to perform professional duties; it should also provide a deeper understanding in order to deal appropriately with the world and society. This is
what the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences are proposing in their white paper ‘Zukunft Bildung Schweiz’ which defines the requirements on the Swiss education system in 2030 using a scenario to describe the future understanding of education in Switzerland. It makes recommendations on the Swiss education strategy and describes its implementation in a roadmap.

From concomitant research towards integrated research in ELSI using the example of nanoscience and nanotechnologies (NaN)
This report forms part of the project «Concept for ELSI-and risk research» by the swiss-academies in the area of foresight and ethics. ELSI stands for Ethical, Legal and Social Implications. Traditional ELSI research goes along with large and high-priced research programmes such as the «Human Genome Project». A new research perspective is currently being developed involving a more comprehensive reflection on the conditions for emergence and the effects of new technologies. In Switzerland, however, there is a methodical deficit regarding the research of socio-cultural problems coming with new technologies. The swiss-academies therefore wish to contribute to the foresight of socio-cultural conditions for the emergence, acceptance, and the use of these technologies.

Three postulates for interdisciplinary nanotechnology

As a highly multi-, inter- and transdisciplinary field, research in nanotechnology faces new challenges. In a recent paper, the swiss-academies formulate concrete postulates regarding the promotion of nanotechnology and its benefits for society

Did the global financial system fail? Questions addressed to finance and business studies

Date: Friday, 12 June 2009, 17.30–20.15, Zurich, ConventionPoint

Conference within the series «Knowledge makes dialogue» of the swiss-academies comprising three speeches and a round table. Organised by the SAHS.

How could the current financial crisis possibly come about? Did mathematic and probabilistic modelling suggest a false sense of security? Did this induce risky behaviours? Were experts aware of the risks, however, did not communicate them explicitly enough? Are there too many financial mathematicians and too few economic experts with a generalist view within the financial system? Do models divert the view on reality and has theory moved too far away from practice?

Transdisciplinarity Conference 2008: Inter- and Transdisciplinary Problem Framing, ETH Zurich

The annual Transdisciplinarity Conference is one of the central means of the td-net to promote excellence in transdisciplinary research and teaching. Its main aim is to provide a platform for the exchange between individuals and teams involved in transdisciplinary projects on a diversity of issues (public health, migration, new technologies, climate change, globalisation, etc.) so that they can learn from each other’s experiences and further develop integrative methods and approaches for knowledge-based solutions to pressing problems in the life-world.
